Cat Out of the Bag Alert!  This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: New York fashion designer Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) is scheduled to marry Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), the mayor’s son, but has to make a trip back to her hometown of Alabama to take care of some business first, such as divorcing her husband Jake (Josh Lucas).

Implied Kitty Carnage Warning! Partway through the movie Jake is driving with Andrew in his truck and tells him a story that happened when Melanie was ten and Eldon’s cat was diagnosed with cancer and scheduled to be put down. Melanie thought it would be more humane to blow Fuzz the cat up with dynamite instead and so they attached the explosives to the cat’s back, added a thirty foot fuse and ran. Fuzz then showed up in town and took off running when the fuse reached his tail, running into the bank which blew up. Jake then explains that people have reported seeing Fuzz around the town to that day, burnt tail and all. The very last shot of the film at the wedding reception (we won’t say whose!) is of the notorious Fuzz, still looking ragged, licking at the wedding cake.

The cat actor named Trapper from Birds and Animals Unlimited had clumps of fur attached to its body to make it look as if he had been through the mill.

Final Mewsings: We question the validity of using dynamite as a means of euthanasia.
