BBC Films
Starring: Florence Pugh, Naomi Ackie
Directed by: William Oldroyd
Synopsis: Based on the book “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” by Nikolai Leskov. A purchased wife named Katherine (Florence Pugh) finds her married life stifling until she meets a handsome groomsman named Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis) and dares to take drastic steps to change her fate.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): In several shots around Katherine’s home a nameless Cornish Rex cat is seen.
The cat appears in several scenes, not interacting with Katherine or the other characters but sitting to one side. In one case the cat is seen eating a neglected breakfast on the table.
Later in the film the cat wanders around the room as Katherine and the maid Anna (Naomi Ackie) await the fate of Katherine’s father-in-law.
At one point the cat is even seen sitting across from Katherine at the table.
Apparently the Cornish Rex breed first appeared circa 1950 and as such is out of place in this period piece.
Final Mewsings: Cats like to be historically accurate.
Many thanks to Biloute for letting us know about the cat in this film.
