Smith’s Pony (1927)

Mack Sennett Comedies
Starring:
Raymond McKee, Mary Ann Jackson, Ruth Hiatt
Directed by: Alfred J. Goulding, Raymond McKee

Synopsis: The Smith family visits San Francisco where they enjoy a meal in Chinatown.  Then they attend a horse and pony show where Jimmy Smith (Raymond McKee) decides to surprise his little girl Bubbles (Mary Anne Jackson) with a pony, but he doesn’t want his wife Mabel (Ruth Hiatt) to find out, leading to comical misunderstandings.

Kitty Cameo: At the horse show, Bubbles gets the idea to make a horse out of the family’s huge dog, Cap (played by canine actor Omar).  She has him pulling herself and a little boy on a wagon.  This works fine until Cap spots a white cat nearby and takes off after it.

The cat and Cap have a standoff as Cap barks at the cat, which arches its back in defense.  It’s quite clear that in real life Omar is only half-heartedly barking at the cat, but the cat isn’t taking any chances!

Final Mewsings: How many cat actors have been scared for the sake of comedy?
