Count Dracula’s Great Love (1973)

by Mark Murton

Original Spanish Title: El gran amor del conde Drácula

Directed by: Javier Aguirre

Synopsis: Stranded at the foot of the Carpathians after their coach loses a wheel on the Borgo Pass, the passengers, a man and four beautiful young women, seek shelter in the abandoned sanatorium that used to be Dracula’s castle. There they meet the new owner, Dr. Wendell Marlowe (Paul Nashy), who is of course the count who just happens to be searching for a virgin sacrifice to resurrect his long-dead daughter.

Purr Blur: The four women make their way to their rooms. When the last of them, Marlene (Ingrid Garbo), reaches hers, just as she opens the door a black cat leaps out (or rather is catapulted) at her in a Spring-Loaded Cat moment complete with a Poor Cat Screech.

The cat lands on the floor and races off down the corridor . . . and clearly kept running because it isn’t seen again.

Final Mewsings: If your film needs a quick jump scare, just throw in (or throw out) a cat.
