Tiger in the Smoke (1956)

by Ted Davis

Directed by: Roy (Ward) Baker

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Uneven mystery thriller which loses a bit of energy and momentum when a silent faceless assassin reveals his person in the guise of Jack Havoc (bland Tony Wright) aka Johnny Cash (no, not that one), described in the movie as a truly evil man and a born killer. Havoc’s ruthless murder spree is prompted by his relentless and consuming search for an unknown treasure hidden during WWII, in which he’s aided by fellow gang members Tilly Doll (Bernard Miles), Rolly Gripper (Thomas Heathcote) and the happily named Crutches (Kenneth Griffith), and opposed by impressive screamer Meg Elgin (Muriel Pavlow), her tried-and-true fiancé Geoffrey Leavitt (Donald Sinden) and numbskull Canon Avril (Laurence Naismith).

Purr Blur: A dark kitty wastes no time crossing the cellar floor in front of a bound and helpless Geoffrey.

Final Mewsings: The cat probably had a pressing appointment elsewhere in the studio, hopefully on the set of a better movie.
