Heaven and Earth Magic (1962)

by Linda Kay

Also Known As: No. 12

Directed by: Harry Smith

Synopsis: A freeform feature of cutout animation blends a wild array of imagery with an unclear storyline to create a uniquely surreal viewing experience.

Kitty Cameos: In the beginning of the film two sarcophagi are introduced along with a tabby cat.

What looks like a small kitten with the head of a dog or monkey enters the frame and scares the tabby away.

The other animal, which could be a combination of animals or just a dog or monkey, takes a watermelon and makes regular appearances throughout the film. The sound of a dog barking often accompanies the animal onscreen.

It really is impossible to tell what kind of animal this little kitten-like creature is. But then most of the imagery is combinations of different objects and difficult to decipher at times.

Final Mewsings: If you’re going include cats, make sure they look like cats!
