Pale Flower (1964)

by Linda Kay

Original Title: Kawaita hana

Directed by: Masahiro Shinoda

Synopsis: Yakuza member Muraki (Ryô Ikebe) is released from prison after serving a sentence for murder only to find disturbing changes amongst his gang, not to mention the presence of a disarming young woman named Saeko (Mariko Kaga) who lives for gambling, fast cars and the next thrill.

Purr Blur: At the start of the film, Muraki is narrating over a montage showing the changes in Tokyo he is discovering upon his release which makes it clear he has no real remorse for his crime. In one shot we see two boys in a narrow alley introducing a dog and a tabby cat to one another. The cat looks less than thrilled.
