The Smashing Machine (2025)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Benny Safdie

Synopsis: A docu-drama recreation of the same-titled documentary about MMA/UFC champion Mark Kerr (portrayed here impressively by Dwayne Johnson) and his struggles with drug addiction and a mutually toxic relationship.

Kitty Cameo: Mark’s girlfriend Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt) attempts to make a smoothie for Mark but doesn’t get it quite right, so while Mark is remaking it she walks to the couch to pick up her blue point longhair cat Sneakers.

Mark finishes making the drink and goes to join Dawn on the couch but stops, reminding Dawn that he asked for the cat not to be on the sofa. He points out the cat ruins the couch which is expensive.

Dawn protests but Mark picks up Sneakers and sets her down on the ground anyway.

After just a moment Dawn asks to let the cat back up, pointing out that Sneakers can sit on her. She picks up the kitty and cradles her on her lap as Mark tolerates the action.

Oddly enough it seems the couple did own a cat named Sneakers (a photo of their kitty is shown during the end credits!) and it almost looks as if they are talking to the cat in the corresponding scene in the original documentary, but Sneakers is not actually seen in that film.

Final Mewsings: If you’re not on the same page about the cat your relationship might be in trouble.
