An Old Man’s Love Story (1913)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Van Dyke Brooke

Synopsis: Ethel (Norma Talmadge) is a young woman in love with the handsome and similarly aged Cyril (Frank O’Neil) but her parents have hopes that she will marry into wealth, their top prospect being the much older James Greythorne (Van Dyke Brooke).

Purr Blur: At one point Cyril is sitting forlornly in his room when Greythorne comes to visit. As the older man sits down a young tuxedo kitten jumps onto the bed behind them.

The kitten lingers for a moment then jumps down, disappearing from the film. Some have speculated that this might be the only existing screen appearance of the Vitagraph Cat named Gasoline, but the markings on this kitten don’t seem to match the famous cat actress.

Final Mewsings: Kittens don’t have to do much to steal a scene.
