Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: University Philosophy Professor Henry Barnes (Edmund Gwenn) feels he has outlived his usefulness and plans to take his own life when the vivacious Peggy Taylor (Jeanne Crain), the wife of a war veteran who is attending college on the G.I. Bill, brings purpose back to his life.
Kitty Cameo: After much cajoling, Peggy convinces Professor Barnes to let her and her husband move into his empty attic space. Professor Barnes is overwhelmed with the increase in activity in his home and is shocked when Peggy’s husband brings home a dog whom she calls Nicodemus. The Professor does not want the dog in the house and states so but Peggy promises she will be able to keep the dog quiet. Nicodemus then starts barking and Peggy explains that he probably has sensed the cat upstairs. Later when the Professor goes to see how they have set up the apartment, we see the cat laying next to Nicodemus on a mat by a small fireplace.
Nicodemus the dog (nicknamed Nicky) is seen several times throughout the film. The cat, who is never given a name, is seen only a couple more times. Once lying by Nicky and the fireplace downstairs by Professor Barnes. Again the cat is lying down.
Finally the cat is seen sitting up next to Peggy during a party.
Professor Barnes walks over and sits next to Peggy but the cat can be seen behind them still on the couch.
Final Mewsings: Cats deserve to have names, too!
