Burnt Evidence (1954)

Synopsis: Diana Taylor (Jane Hylton), is having an affair with Jim Thompson (Donald Gray), a friend of her builder husband Jack (Duncan Lamont). Jack finds out and a confrontation between the two men at his workshop turns into a fight during which the place is accidentally set on fire. The next morning a body is found amongst the ruins but is it Diana’s husband or her lover?

Kitty Cameo: After Jack finds out about the affair he disappears and Diana sends Jim to look for him at his workshop while she waits at home with Mrs. Raymond (Irene Handl), who rents two rooms in the house. As Mrs Raymond sits sewing, Diana cradles a tuxedo cat on her lap.

As they talk, a fire engine can be heard racing past outside. Oddly enough the cat is not in the very next shot of the ladies who are still talking on the bed.

As Inspector Edwards continues to try and identify the body found in the burnt-out workshop, his subordinate Alf Quinney (Cyril Smith) arrives at the house to collect Diana to help with the identification. The cat quickly arrives at his feet, ready to be let in. While waiting for the door to be answered Quinney bends down to stroke the kitty.

Final Mewsings: Cats are willing to cooperate with the police in exchange for scritches.
