Synopsis: Newsreel footage captures the moments when press photographer Lee Miller returns to her home in Downshire Hill, Hampstead, London.
Reality Cat: Lee is welcomed home by her artist husband Roland Penrose. After helping Lee shed her baggage, coat and gloves, Penrise hands her a tabby kitten who was reportedly born while she was away.
Miller carries the kitten to the couch and sits down, she tucks the kitten inside her jacket.
Penrose brings her copies of her latest photo book and the kitten glances over the volume before jumping down from Miller’s lap.
The couple were clearly cat lovers and they owned several tabby cats over the years. According to one of their children, Lee adopted two tabbies she named Jeep and Taxi during the Blitz. Jeep went on to have kittens, one of whom was named Mrs. De Valera (after the First Lady of Ireland). It’s not clear which kitten appears in this newsreel, although it possibly may have been Mrs. De Valera.
Final Mewsings: What could be better than coming home to a new kitten?
