Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Air Force pilot Carol Danvers aka Vers (Brie Larson) goes through a journey of discovery which leads to her developing her powers to become Captain Marvel.
Featured Feline (of sorts): Danvers eventually teams with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and together they go to a U.S. Air Force base to look for information about her past. While there they see a ginger tabby cat with a tag that says her name is Goose. Danvers has seen this cat before in her fragmented memories.
Nick Fury shows a soft side when he lavishes affection on Goose. Danvers has to direct him back to the task at hand.
When the two escape in a cargo jet, they realize Goose has stowed aboard and is pinned to a crate by the force of how fast they are flying.
Danvers slows the craft so Goose can join them up front.
Later when Danvers and Fury are visiting Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) they are confronted by a Skrull named Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) who is absolutely terrified at the sight of Goose. Danvers holds the cat up to hold him back. Talos explains that Goose is not a cat but a Flerken.
Fury remains skeptical and teases Talos with Goose as they fly to find the laboratory of Danver’s former mentor. During the flight they experience weightlessness for a few moments.
Goose leads them to the Tesseract, an important power source. But Star Force arrives and captures them, including Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) who trained Danvers and has now turned on her.
Recognized as a Flerken, Goose is muzzled and put into a carrier.
Fury eventually releases Goose from the muzzle and is surprised when the Flerken opens her mouth and tentacles shoot out, swallowing up the Tesseract and keeping it safe inside its “cat” body.
Goose comes in handy again when Fury and Rambeau are cornered, swallowing the enemies.
Although Fury wants Goose to swallow yet another perceived enemy, Goose recognizes them as a disguised friend and doesn’t comply.
Heading back, Fury is being cutesy with Goose again but goes too far and Goose rakes his face with her claws, blinding his left eye which leads to him wearing his signature eyepatch (going against the original storyline that Fury lost his eye during World War II, which didn’t fit this film’s storyline).
In a tag after the end credits, Goose climbs onto Nick Fury’s desk and hacks up the Tesseract like a hairball.
The cat actors starring in the film were Reggie, Gonzo, Rizzo and Archie, trained by Ursula Brauner for Animals for Hollywood.
