Starring: Robert Ryan, Chuck Connors, Nanette Newman, Christopher Hartstone
Directed by: James Hill
Synopsis: Based on stories by Jules Verne. A few of the passengers and crew of a sinking ship are rescued by Captain Nemo (Robert Ryan) in the Nautilus and taken to a fabulous underwater city built by the reclusive man. But not all of the guests are happy when they learn that they will never be allowed to leave, especially when they realize the city contains a fortune in gold!
Featured Feline: When the ship begins to sink in a violent Atlantic storm the passengers scramble to disembark. Phillip Becket (Christopher Hartstone), the son of one of the passengers, runs back to his cabin to rescue a tuxedo kitten, which he stows inside a tiny box. Once the passengers have been rescued by the Nautilus crew, one crew member is surprised to feel the hard, square shape under Phillip’s clothes and discovers the kitten inside the box, which he gives to Phillip.
A short time later, the rescued people wait in Captain Nemo’s quarters to meet with the man himself. The room is filled with an uneasy silence until the sound of the pipe organ startles them, but it is Phillip’s kitten (named Timothy) on the keyboard. Timothy is seen throughout the rest of the film, usually being carried by Phillip.
Final Mewsings: Cats remain calm under pressure.
