Synopsis: Caroline Duffy (Lea Thompson) is a successful cartoonist living in New York and her comic strip entitled Caroline in the City is a semi-autobiographical work. In the series pilot Caroline is advertising for a new colorist and ends up hiring an acerbic artist named Richard (Malcolm Gets). She is also trying to deal with the recent breakup from her boyfriend Del (Eric Lutes) who happens to work for the comic’s syndicate.
Cinema Cat: Tiki won the role of Salty, a series regular, after starring in the 1993 Walt Disney remake of The Incredible Journey. The pretty Himalayan became Caroline’s cat who is also portrayed in the comic strip and sometimes in the show’s animated interstitials. She is seen sitting on Caroline’s drawing table in the very first scene (a spot that Salty would inhabit often.)
Salty then interacts with Richard by jumping into his lap, which he plays off with disdain in his usual gruff manner.
Caroline explains that Salty’s real name is Salt and that there was another cat named Pepper but that he was a male so naturally ran away (referring to Caroline’s bad luck with men.)
Later Richard is seen flicking water from his paint brush in Salty’s direction.
Salty would go on to have many great moments in the series and we hope to cover more of them in future posts.
Final Mewsings: More television series should have cats as regulars!
Many thanks to @tvdvdguy for reminding us about Salty and this terrific series!
