Hal Roach Studios
Starring: Joe Cobb, Bobby ‘Wheezer’ Hutchins, Allen ‘Farina’ Hoskins
Directed by: Robert F. McGowan
Synopsis: The gang is lectured by the President of the Be Kind to Animals Society after their dog-powered cars chase a cat up a tree. The kids vow to protect all animals all the way down to the tiniest of insects. Wheezer in particular resolves to change his animal-abuse ways when he suffers from a scary nightmare in which the animals put him on trial.
Kitty Cameo: The beginning of the short finds some of the kids racing in their cars which are being powered by dogs under the hoods. This works well until a black cat, which has been lying in the road taking a dirt bath, sees them coming and runs away.
The dogs take chase until the cat runs up a tree, then the dogs leap at the tree in turn, causing the cars with the kids still inside to hang on for dear life.
This is when the older woman calls the President of the Be Kind to Animals Society over to lecture them. Oddly enough despite the short’s title and the fact that the rest of the film has to do with the kids being kind to animals this is the only cat seen in the entire piece.
Final Mewsings: All animals deserve to be treated with kindness!
