CQ (2001)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Roman Coppola

Synopsis: Paul (Jeremy Davies) is a young film editor and aspiring filmmaker living in Paris who is working on a science fiction spy drama with noted director Andrezej (Gérard Depardieu) who is fired from the picture. Paul eventually takes the helm to direct the as-of-yet-unknown new ending while developing a crush on the film’s star Valentine (Angela Lindvall).

Kitty Cameos: While recording some audio looping for the trailer, Paul points out that Valentine has a loose eyelash and suggests she make a wish. She blows the eyelash then announces, “I wish cats could talk,” explaining her cat is pregnant and she wishes she could talk to her. Later Paul returns home and is filming himself for a film in which he is documenting his life. His frustrated girlfriend Marlene (Élodie Bouchez) asks what his biggest wish is and he quietly says, “I wish cats could talk.” Marlene immediately knows that as something Valentine would say and storms off in a huff. Still later, Paul calls Valentine at her home where she sounds panicked. He races to her place to find her calmly sitting next to a calico cat with several kittens.

Final Mewsings: Even if cats could talk they probably wouldn’t tell you too much about their lives anyway.
