Der Liebe der Jeanne Ney (1927)

by Ted Davis

Directed by: G.W. Pabst

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Satisfying tense melodrama which follows harassed heroine Jeanne Ney (Edith Jehanne) from the battle-torn Crimea to the cosmopolitan city of Paris, France, where there are other dangers to face, most notably an unwanted sexual assault from her prosperous pop-eyed Uncle Raymond (Adolf E. Licho) and repeated attempts at seduction proffered by slimy and lecherous profiteer Chalybjew (Fritz Rasp, who always delivers the goods), but where she is also reunited with Bolshevik cheerleader Andreas Labov (Uno Henning), her one true love.

Purr Blur: As Poitras (Hans Jaray), Labov’s loyal compatriot and sometime beret model, sits waiting behind the steering wheel of his automobile, a black cat enters the frame behind the car and plops down immediately, sitting on the street. Note that the cat does not appear in the American version of the film which uses an alternate take.
