Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: After losing their younger brother to a drug overdose, Leon (Stephen Dorff) and Bobby (Brad Renfro) use their New York street gang, The Deuces, to keep drugs out of the neighborhood.
Kitty Cameo: Late in the film Bobby’s girlfriend Annie (Fairuza Balk) is looking for some hidden money in the home of a gangster named Philly (Louis Lombardi). The drug dealers (one of whom is Annie’s brother) have hidden the money in a cupboard underneath a litter box. Annie sneaks into the place in the dark and opens the cupboard. To her surprise an orange tabby cat is inside and steps out.
According to the director and editor’s commentary track on the film the cat just happened to be inside the cabinet and the shot wasn’t planned. This is highly questionable since the American Humane Association reports being on the set and that six alternating tabby cats were used for this single action with a trainer using a buzzer to call the cat to them.
Final Mewsings: How did the cat open and close the door to the cabinet?
