Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Father Amaro (Gael García Bernal) faces various challenges when he is assigned to a small parish church in Los Reyes, Mexico; one being the beautiful Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancón) who catches his eye.
Cat Cattle Call: One character in the film is Dionisia (Luisa Huertas), an elderly busy-body and witch-like woman who loves gossip and scandal. When she takes the sacrament, she actually spits it out to use later. Her home is filled with cats.
The first time we see the cats in her home, she takes the wafer out of her Bible and gives it to a black cat named Salome, saying she brought the cat her medicine, the body of Christ.
Later in the film Father Amaro goes to Dionisia to ask a favor. There are still numerous cats in the home and Dionisia is even holding a black one when she approaches.
Kitty Cameos: A black and white tuxedo kitten is seen walking across a room in a scene where Father Amaro is talking to the church’s sexton.
Finally a white cat is seen at the end of a film being played on television (we are still trying to identify the title of this Mexican film noir).
Final Mewsings: Cats would prefer treats to wafers.
