Going Overboard (1989)

by Mark Murton

Directed by: Valerie Breiman

Synopsis: Woeful comedy starring Adam Sandler as Shecky Moskowitz, a struggling comedian working a menial job on a cruise ship as he awaits his big break. The ship is also hosting the Miss Universe contest which is interrupted by the arrival of hit men sent by General Noriega (Burt Young) to kill Miss Australia after she insults him in an interview.

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): The film opens with General Noriega loading a tape into his VCR entitled The Unsinkable Shecky Moskowitz and this leads us into the film. Periodically the story cuts back to Noriega sitting at his desk watching the tape. On one such occasion the camera pans left from the TV screen to a bowl of milk as a white kitten with black markings approaches and sniffs at it.

As the camera continues to pan left the little camera hog turns back and crosses the desk in the same direction as the camera and so manages to stay in shot until crossing in front of Noriega!

The kitten appears just once more, in a short sequence inserted during the end credits. Noriega cradles the cat as he pulls the pin from a grenade with his teeth and casually tosses the explosive out of shot. The kitten follows its trajectory and the screen goes blank as the grenade explodes.

Final Mewsings: Despite the cute kitten we just couldn’t go overboard for this dismal effort!
