Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: David Callaway (Robert DeNiro) is concerned when his daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) creates an imaginary friend in the wake of her mother’s suicide, then really becomes worried when this “friend” starts tormenting him.
Kitty Cameo: The Callaway’s own a long-haired gray cat which is never called by name (although we understand the cat’s name was Sebastian). We first see the cat in a carrier cage as David and Emily prepare to move out of the city.
On the way to their new home in the country, the cat is seen yawning in the cage in the car.
After this the cat appears once for an all-too-familiar spring-loaded cat moment, jumping out when David opens a closet door.
The cat is seen a couple of times after this, mostly just to remind us he is there.
Kitty Carnage Warning! Unfortunately this is just one of those cases when the cat is only present in order to be murdered in a shocking scene. In this case, David finds him drowned in a bathtub full of murky water.
Three Maine Coon mixes were provided by Animal Actors, Inc. to play the part of Sebastian. Of course a fake cat was used for the bathtub scene.
Final Mewsings: People have got to stop having cats in movies just to kill them!
