Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: David (Ben Tibber) is a young boy who escapes from a Bulgarian communist camp, stows away aboard a ship to Italy and then sets out on foot in an attempt to reach Denmark.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): David is friended by a woman named Sophie (Joan Plowright) who drives him across the border into Switzerland where she lives. Sophie is trying very hard to get David to trust her so she can help him, but David has been told he can’t trust anyone. At Sophie’s home, she and David are sharing some food when a beautiful torbie cat named Annette approaches.
Moments later Sophie picks up Annette and kisses her.
She then asks David if he would like to hold the cat and hands Annette over to him, promising him that she won’t bite.
David is surprised at how soft Annette feels. He then looks startled and exclaims, “And she’s vibrating!” Sophie laughs and explains that Annette is purring. Sophie asks David if he’s ever stroked a cat before and he admits he hasn’t.
David turns Annette to look into her face. At that moment, you can see the wall he’s put up start to crumble. He pulls Annette to him and hugs her emotionally. After this, he opens up to Sophie and trusts her.
Final Mewsings: Cats give us comfort and courage when we need it the most.
