Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Brilliant and naive Dr. Chris Cooper (Kevin McDonald), a research scientist for Roritor Pharmaceuticals, helps discover a new drug, promptly dubbed Gleemonex, which eliminates all traces of depression, as advertised in one of the slogans: “Makes it feel like it’s 72° in your head every lovin’ day!” Regrettably, in the company’s unseemly haste to corner the lucrative market, Roritor sacrifices the necessary due-diligence safety tests for the drug, with the result that after several months of taking Gleemonex, users fall into a motionless coma where they experience the happiest moment of their lives, endlessly cycling . . . which, if we’re rating comas, sounds better than most.
Cat Cattle Call: Upon realizing the significance of the drug’s side effects, Dr. Cooper rushes to the home of Mrs. Hurdicure (Scott Thompson), the first test subject, and enters the house which turns out to contain numerous cats.
Most of the cats are seen in the living room, but as the doctor walks into the dining room an (obviously fake) tabby cat falls directly onto the stunned doctor’s head, who cries, “Cat on my head!! Cat on my head!!”
Implied Kitty Carnage Warning! He throws the (still fake) cat to the carpet where it gets up and runs away (thanks to some clever editing).
The doctor looks up to see numerous (also fake) cats standing upside down on the ceiling. Another cat drops from the ceiling during the sequence, but misses his target.
Dr. Cooper finds the comatose Mrs. Hurdicure in the yard, being accosted by nasty neighbor kids, and chases them away, in the process passing by a grey tuxedo windowsill cat eating from a can, and scaring a ginger cat which finds refuge under a nearby car.
Final Mewsings: It’s no surprise at all that the neglected Mrs. Hurdicure is a cat lady.
