English Title: Common Wealth
Directed by: Álex de la Iglesia
Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Real estate agent Julia (Carmen Maura) thinks she’s hit the jackpot when she discovers a fortune in a dead man’s apartment but soon finds her dream turning into a nightmare when the residents of the building have other plans.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): At the beginning of the film we see the apartment building where the story takes place. A Siamese cat is on the balcony of one of the top floor apartments.
The cat jumps through the window into a filthy apartment which is flooded.
Proceeding cautiously, the cat approaches a decaying body and starts nibbling on one of the man’s fingers.
A silhouette of the cat walks through the opening credits a couple of times.
While showing an apartment below the deceased man’s residence, Julia moves in temporarily with her husband Ricardo (Jesús Bonilla). The next morning when clients arrive to view the place, Ricardo has to run out onto the balcony in the rain to avoid being seen. He looks up to see the Siamese cat getting soaked in the rain on the above balcony.
Discovering the water leakage from the dead man’s apartment, the fire department is called and breaks down the door. As water gushes out the Siamese cat also jumps free of the apartment with a Poor Cat Screech then runs away never to be seen again.
The animal wrangler on the film was Fabio Diéguez.
Final Mewsings: For such a big build up this cat received very little actual screen time!
Many thanks to Nick Wale for letting us know about the cat in this film.
