Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains spoilers for this episode!
Synopsis: Based on the hugely popular webcomic by Tracy Butler. It’s 1927 and Prohibition is the law in St. Louis, Missouri. A speakeasy beneath the Little Daisy Cafe has fallen on hard times but a group of ambitious friends will do what they can to keep the establishment afloat.
Cartoon Cats: The pilot episode follows the poetic, musical and manic Rocky (voiced by Michael Kovach) who along with Ivy (voiced by Lisa Reimold) and Calvin, aka Freckle (voiced by Belsheber Rusape) goes to a graveyard to retrieve a stash of bootleg liquor, only to be interrupted by several rough hoodlums who give them grief.
Later we visit the speakeasy and meet much of the cast, including proprietor and widow Mitzi May (voiced by Ashe Wagner).
This amazing independently produced animated pilot (funded entirely through fan donations) is fabulously executed with such love and care. The love of cats is clearly evident. Even though the cats are anthropomorphized the cat traits given to the characters show a real understanding of feline emotions and attitudes. We don’t want to give too much away about this series. Check it out, go read the comics at the official website and fall in love with it yourself!
Final Mewsings: Cats and the roaring twenties . . . a purrfect combination!
