This review contains a severe Kitty Carnage Warning!
Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: The Japanese invasion of China further exacerbates the difficulties experienced by a shop owner named Lin (Tian Xie) and his family.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Lin’s teenage daughter comes home from school upset because the anti-Japanese sentiment causes her to be ridiculed for wearing Japanese clothing. She is lying on her bed sulking. A long-haired tabby kitten is sleeping in her arms.
Kitty Carnage Warning! Without warning, the girl suddenly shoves the kitten away from her and off the bed.
The kitten even tries to hang on to the girl’s sleeve, but she keeps pushing and swatting the poor kitten away.
Lin’s wife comes in to console her daughter. As they are talking, we hear the kitten mew off screen. Suddenly the kitten is thrown, or “catapulted” into the shot from someone offscreen. The poor kitten stumbles to get its feet.
Undaunted, the kitten climbs up onto the bed with the girl and mother.
Shockingly, the girl just shoves the kitten off the bed again. The kitten sits to one side, looking adorable. This is unforgivable treatment of such a tiny animal actor.
Final Mewsings: Don’t take your anger out on a tiny, helpless kitten!!
