Look at Life: “What a Pet!” (1961)

by Linda Kay

Narrated by: Tim Turner

Synopsis: This short British documentary film focuses on some rare and exotic pets before narrowing down the focus of its subject to that of the popular budgerigars.

Reality Cats: After talking about “budgies” (as they are affectionately known) for a while the film cuts to one of the birds jumping around on a poodle as the narrator explains that dogs are the most popular pets. We then see a cream colored tabby lying on a chair as cats are named the second most popular pet.

The narrator states that some cats have learned to get along with the birds but that it’s a risky business as a tuxedo cat is shown looking out a window. Note that no birds are in the same frame as the cats who are both licking their lips.
