Lust for Life (1956)

Lust for Life DVD

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)
Starring:
Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, James Donald
Directed by: Vincente Minnelli

Synopsis: A stark biographical depiction of the life of painter Vincent Van Gogh (Kirk Douglas) and his struggles with artistic passions and mental illness.

Purr Blurs: In one scene, Paul Gaugin (Anthony Quinn) is going to visit Vincent and is walking down a street.  He pauses and in the background we see two cats apparently being thrown from a building onto a street, a white one with markings and a black one.  They turn in opposite directions and scurry away.

Later Gaugin is again walking down a street and a small cat is sitting in the walkway.  The cat jumps up to the low wall beside the path and then scurries ahead of Gaugin before jumping back down again and disappearing.  This is right before the unforgettable ear-cutting segment.
