Synopsis: Three Americans meet on a boat from Hong Kong to Macao . . . expatriot Nick Cochran (Robert Mitchum), shady femme fatale Julie Benson (Jane Russell) and traveling salesman Lawrence C. Trumble (William Bendix.) They soon become involved in different ways with Vincent Halloran (Brad Dexter), the crooked owner of the most popular casino in town. Only Halloran suspects that one of the new arrivals is actually an undercover police inspector who plans to lure him past the three-mile limit in order to apprehend him.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): In one scene Nick Cochran is being chased through the back alleys of Macao by Halloran’s goons. Down a dark alley, a longhair black cat is standing in a windowsill.
Cochran backs toward the window and pauses a moment before running away, leaving the cat somewhat confused.
Director Josef von Sternberg was known to include black cats in many of his films.
Final Mewsings: A cat makes any chase scene that much more exciting.
