Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) is confused about her place in Aurora’s (Elle Fanning) life when Aurora becomes engaged to Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson) and Maleficent is asked to meet his family.
Featured Feline: Philip’s mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) has a long-haired tabby cat companion who is not named. The cat is first seen standing on a chest which is then opened.
The cat then follows Queen Ingrith from the room.
When Maleficent arrives for dinner at Philip’s family castle, the cat is beneath the large dining table.
During dinner the cat seems intrigued by Maleficent’s companion Diaval (Sam Riley) who is actually Maleficent’s crow in human form.
The conversation at the table becomes strained when Queen Ingrith purposefully tries to rile Maleficent to anger. The cat climbs up on the chair next to Diaval and then onto the table.
The cat then takes a leap at Diaval (in many descriptions online people seem to think the cat is about to attack Maleficent, but we believe the cat is attacking Diaval because he senses the man is actually a bird). Maleficent shoots magic at the cat which freezes the animal in mid-air. She warns the Queen to “contain your animal . . . or I will!”
There is a tense moment until Aurora begs Maleficent to stop. She releases the cat from her power. The cat drops to the table then scrambles to run away.
The cat appears only one more time to chase the fairy creature Pinto through the castle.
Pinto disappears down a hole leaving the cat behind.
The animal actors were provided by Birds and Animals Unlimited.
Final Mewsings: You can’t blame a cat for knowing when a man is a bird!
Many thanks to Nick Wale for letting us know about the cat in this film!
