Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: College baseball star Doug Gordon (Patrick McGaw) has a brief affair with a medical student named Melissa Nelson (Molly Ringwald). But when Doug’s girlfriend returns from a trip he tries to break it off with Melissa. Not so easy to do!
Featured Feline: Doug lives at home with his widowed mother (Mimi Kuzyk) and a gray cat (whose name is not mentioned, which is never a good sign). The cat is first seen in two scenes sitting by Doug’s answering machine and listening to the message of “You know what to do when you hear the beep!”
Later the cat is lying on Doug’s lap as he works on college homework.
Doug gets a call from his girlfriend Laura (Sarah Lassez) but they are interrupted when Melissa also calls Doug. He tries to juggle the two calls before finally getting rid of Melissa and sitting down on a chair with the cat to finish his conversation with Laura.
Later in the film Melissa breaks into Doug’s house and drugs him. She approaches the cat, petting and then picking it up.
Kitty Carnage Warning! Of course in the next scene Laura wakes up and goes into her bathroom to find the cat murdered and hanging on the back of the bathroom door. The dead cat is clearly fake but this is just another example of a poor cat being the victim of a crazy killer to set the tone of the film.
Final Mewsings: Cats really don’t know what to do when they hear the beep.
Many thanks to Nick Wale for letting us know about the cat in this movie.
