Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains spoilers for this episode!
Synopsis: Marc Maron stars in this comedy series in which he portrays himself as a middle-aged comedian and podcaster who is living a quiet life of desperation alone in a home with his cats.
Featured Feline: In real life and on the show Marc lives with three cats named Monkey, LaFonda and Boomer. On his podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, he often refers to his home as the Cat Ranch since he not only owns cats but cares for several strays around the property.
Boomer, an orange tabby, is the only one of Maron’s cats featured in this episode (we assume that Boomer was played by a cat actor but this cannot be confirmed at this time). Boomer is seen at the beginning when Maron is talking to the veterinarian (Erin Daniels) who is examaning Boomer. She assures Maron that Boomer only has a slight stomach bug and tries to dissuade him from bringing the cat back in again too soon.
Even though Boomer is not actually seen again he is a constant presence throughout this first episode in his cat cage, which Maron has in the back of his car for much of the proceedings. Boomer gets sick and poops in his cage, which Maron is cleaning when he realizes Dave Foley is on his front porch. Both Boomer and Maron’s love of cats are mentioned many times in this episode.
The real Boomer sadly disappeared which became the focus of a future episode of the series (which we will eventually cover here) and led to the epitaph Boomer Lives! which became a popular saying on the podcast and amongst Maron’s fans.
Cat Cattle Call: At the end of the episode Maron finds a fan at the pet food store and ends up visiting his home, which the man openly refers to as a cat shelter. Maron and the guy are seen surrounded by cats.
Maron assures the man that he has no intention of taking any of the cats home with him.
Final Mewsings: Boomer lives!
