Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Rob Salinger (Dudley Moore) finds himself leading a double life when both his wife Micki (Ann Reinking) and his lover Maude (Amy Irving) become pregnant.
Featured Feline: When Rob goes to Maude’s apartment for the first time they fall into her bed to make love. Maude’s long-haired orange cat is sitting on the bed when they lay down. Maude’s high-heeled foot moves towards the cat and it gets up and jumps off the bed, leaving the couple to continue their romancing.
Later Rob returns to her apartment and their clothes are seen strewn across the floor. Maude’s cat is sitting outside of the bedroom, looking curious.
The cat is next seen in Rob and Maude’s new apartment, sitting on a chair when Maude gets up from her cello playing to have morning sickness.
One scene with the cat is a very cute moment when Rob and Maude are sitting together eating Chinese food and watching television. The cat is on the couch behind them and climbs over Rob’s shoulder to put its nose in the take-out box.
Rob laughs at this and asks the cat what it wants. He then picks up an eggroll and holds it out to the cat. The cat climbs in front of Rob and takes one end of the egg roll in its mouth while Rob places the other end in his own mouth and they have a kind of tug-of-war with the eggroll for a moment.
In a later scene the cat is again seen sitting on the couch and doesn’t move at all as the camera pans out and back during a scene in which Rob and Maude are talking while practicing Lamaze.
Finally the cat is seen near the end of the film in Maude’s new beach house, sitting on the windowsill.
Final Mewsings: You’ll never win a tug-of-war for an egg roll against a cat!
