Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: A seemingly lovely little boy named Mikey (Brian Bonsall) is adopted by a new family with no clue to his violent past.
Kitty Cameo: When Mikey moves in with his new family, he befriends the neighbor boy Ben (Whit Hertford). Ben shows Mikey his pet frog. A shorthair gray cat named Rosie is sitting just behind the aquarium.
At one point the frog jumps out of Ben’s hands and lands on the carpet. Rosie leaps after the frog which disappears as she passes. One is supposed to assume the cat grabbed the frog and ran away with it, but in slow motion it’s clear the frog jumped out of frame as the cat actor passed. It’s also interesting to note that this cat has white paws whereas in every other shot Rosie does not.
Rosie is seen again briefly when Ben’s sister Jessie (Josie Bissett) comes home from boarding school. She picks up the cat and carries her to the stairs, saying she missed her. She then sets Rosie down and the cat runs up the stairs ahead of her.
Later a jealous Mikey throws a rock through Jessie’s window as she is making out with her boyfriend David (David Rogge). David runs outside to confront the person who threw the rock and is startled when Rosie jumps out in front of him in true spring-loaded cat fashion (with a poor cat screech as well!).
Jessie scolds David for being mad at Rosie. As they go back inside, we see Mikey in the bushes holding the cat.
Kitty Carnage Warning! As the camera zooms in on Mikey we hear a crack and we know he has broken the cat’s neck. If that isn’t bad enough, he places Rosie’s body behind the wheel of David’s truck so when he backs out he thinks he’s killed the cat. Oddly enough, even though Rosie is given some notable moments there is never one really clear single shot of the cat in the film.
Final Mewsings: If you’re going to include a cat in your movie, give us at least one good close up!
