Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: A bratty adopted girl named Matilda (Heaven Lee Kramer) gets turned into a cat by a family of witches.
Featured Feline: Moo Moo is a longhaired black and white cat who lives with a family of witches comprised of mother Sabrina (Barbara Jean Barrielle) and her daughters Guinevere (Alexa Joel) and Gwendolyn (Alyssa Kennedy). There is also Felicity (Anita Marie Curran), another witch who does fortune telling with Sabrina to bring in money to live.
The obnoxious orphan Matilda has been adopted by Sabrina’s sister Phoebe (Chantelle Albers) and her husband Kevin (Billy Mikus) who already have a daughter named Noel (Sophia Millar). Noel has magical powers but Phoebe will not let her use them. Phoebe drops Matilda and Noel off at Sabrina’s home when Kevin disappears (for reasons way too complicated to get into here).
The girls get fed up with Matilda’s nasty attitude and turn her into the cat Moo Moo. How exactly they change her into a cat that already exists is not clear. We can hear Matilda talking but Noel is the only other one who can hear her. A good portion of the film is taken up with the girls looking for Moo Moo or trying to figure out how to turn the cat back into Matilda.
Complicating issues is a bad witch named Fiona (Rafaela Salvadori) who has just moved into the neighborhood and is stealing away all of the fortune telling business. Moo Moo ends up in her clutches for a brief period.
The girls manage to save Moo Moo from Fiona but then encounter social worker Mr. Jackson (David Neff) who comes looking for Matilda after she previously called him with unfounded complaints. They don’t tell him Matilda is a cat but they hand him Moo Moo, causing him to sneeze.
If this all sounds extremely confusing, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Plots and subplots go all over the place. Despite a good portion of the plot revolving around a girl being changed into a cat (and the cat’s name front and center in the title) there is really not enough appearances of the cat to justify watching this muddled mess.
What is clear is the cat actor playing Moo Moo, Spotlight Kramer, does not seem particular thrilled about being in this movie. At times he or she even lashes out at the actors or hisses, particularly when being held by Fiona and when Mr. Jackson sneezes while holding the cat. Not surprisingly there is no cat wrangler or animal training company listed in the credits.
We don’t blame Spotlight Kramer for being less than enthusiastic about being in this movie.
Final Mewsings: Cats know when they are trapped in a bad movie.
