My Pal Paul (1930)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Walter Lantz

Synopsis: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (voiced by Pinto Colvig) tries to imitate his idol, band leader Paul Whiteman (voiced by himself), but can he hold a candle to the original when the man happens to pass by?

Cartoon Cats: At the beginning of the short, Oswald is playing a concert for his friends. His instruments are all actually cats submitting themselves to some bizarre treatment. The first is being played like a violin, with the bow moving across the cat’s tail as he meowls.

Oswald then plays the cat like a saxophone, blowing into the end of its tail.

Finally the cat’s whiskers are played like a guitar. At this moment a little tyke exposes the fact that Oswald is simply pretending to play to one of Paul Whiteman’s records.

Final Mewsings: When they say you should play with your cat, this is NOT what they mean!
