Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is a mild-mannered husband and father whose secret past comes to the surface when his family experiences a robbery in their home.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): The film opens with a shot of Hutch sitting at a table in handcuffs. After lighting a cigarette, he pulls a can of tuna from inside his jacket and a can opener. After opening the can, he reaches into another inside pocket to pull out an adorable, scruffy seal point kitten.
He sets the kitten on the table so it can eat from the can of tuna.
We then see the police interrogators sitting across from him. They ask who he is.
The film goes back and explains how Hutch came to be in this situation. At work a woman is trying to find some kind of animal who is in the ceiling somewhere. At home, Hutch’s daughter suggests the family needs a cat. In addition, the action is really set off when the same daughter finds that her kitty cat bracelet is missing and Hutch realizes it was likely stolen by the burglars. After much bloodshed, Hutch calls his wife from work and then hears a noise. The kitten is inside a duct. He carefully carries the tiny kitty into the lunch room where he gets the tuna and can opener, then waits to be arrested.
Back in the interrogation room, Hutch insists he’s nobody. The hungry kitten continues to eat the tuna.
Bob Odenkirk noted on the commentary track how unique it was to find a kitten which would remain quiet inside his jacket before being revealed.
The kitten was played by cat actor London Fog. The animal coordinator on the film was Courtney Voth working with animal trainer Jillian Fadun.
Final Mewsings: You are never too busy to rescue a kitten.
