Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: The Liar’s Club is holding a meeting to see who can tell the most fabulous fib. One member brings in Charley who proceeds to tell about how as a botanist he created a formula to make grafted plants grow practically anything.
Cat Casualty: Charley Bowers silent shorts are bizarre flights-of-fantasy which incorporate amazing stop motion animation and other special effects, as is the case in this short. While wandering to sell his new growth formula, Charley ends up in the house of an old man and a young woman. Their home is full of holes because of an infestation of mice. Charley spots a cat off to one side which is swathed in bandages.
Moments later we see a mouse emerge from a hole and look out from the staircase. The cat looks over and sees the mouse just as the mouse pulls a tiny gun on the cat and fires! The cat runs for cover.
Kitty Cameo: Charley wants to help the girl so he gets to work grafting a pussy willow plant which ends up growing a black cat!
Charley notices that the cat has emerged without a tail.
After venturing outside and bringing back a cat tail, Charley grafts it to the plant and grows the cat a tail, which he cuts from the plant and puts on the black cat.
Cat Cattle Call: Charley leaves his pussy willow plant and it immediately starts spewing out cats and kitties, right and left!
Charley and the girl go upstairs and open a door and countless cats come pouring out!
For a time cats are seen everywhere, pouring out of the room, flying down the stairs and eventually running out of the house.
At the end of the short the old man chases Charley off and the girl is seen watching them as she holds a cat.
Final Mewsings: Who wouldn’t want a tree that grows cats?
