Synopsis: An anthology of five different stories from acclaimed writer O. Henry, introduced by fellow author John Steinbeck. An all-star cast brings the following stories to life: The Cop and the Anthem, The Clarion Call, The Last Leaf, The Ransom of Red Chief and The Gift of the Magi.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer) The segment related to this blog is the second one directed by Henry Hathaway, The Clarion Call, which tells the story of Barney Woods (Dale Robertson), a police detective who realizes that a twisted old friend of his named Johnny Kernan (Richard Widmark) has committed a murder. When Johnny takes Barney back to his apartment we see a woman (Ava Norring) laying on the bed playing with a kitten.
When Johnny comes in he tells the girl to leave, slapping her a couple of times before she goes. She returns shortly afterwards asking for the kitten, which Johnny hands to her before shoving her away again. The tabby kitten is simply adorable and steals the scene away from even this very beautiful actress.
Final Mewsings: Richard Widmark isn’t all bad . . . at least he didn’t slap the kitten!
