Synopsis: A virulent and clandestine poison pen campaign strikes a quiet and peaceful English village, inflaming dark passions and hidden jealousies which lead to a tragic suicide and a brutal murder. The gentle vicar (Reginald Tate), aided by his inestimable sister Mary Rider (Flora Robson), attempts to quell the hate-filled tide, which threatens to engulf the entire village, and destroy the lives of Ann (Ann Todd), the vicar’s daughter, and her fiancé David (Geoffrey Toone).

Purr Blur: Genial shopkeeper Len Griffin (Edward Chapman), shepherded by ineffectual village policeman (Norman Pierce), walks to his doom after leaving The Lion pub, and passes a tuxedo cat sitting in a doorway. The cat steps out from the door after Griffin walks by.
