Politics (1931)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Charles Reisner

Synopsis: Widow Hattie Burns (Marie Dressler) has no interest in politics like her friend and lodger Ivy Higgins (Polly Moran) but gets pulled into running for mayor when she stands up to the corrupt incumbent who won’t clean the town of speakeasies.

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Ivy owns a little bird that gets loose while Hattie is cleaning his cage. Ivy immediately jumps out of bed and gathers up her black cat Nero from his bassinet and puts him out through the window, hoping the cat hasn’t already eaten the bird.

In a later scene Nero is let into the house by Hattie who tells him, “Time all nice kitties were in bed.”

Nero only appears once more, sitting contentedly on a chair as Hattie and Ivy note that even he is happy with the prospect of Hattie getting elected.

Final Mewsings: Hattie clearly knew nothing about cats’ bedtime habits.
