Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains spoilers for this episode!
Synopsis: Shawn (James Roday) suspects that a string of suicides are the work of a serial killer so to gain access to the investigations he pretends to get psychic clues from the cat belonging to one of the victims.
Featured Feline: The calico-colored cat in this episode is referred to only as Little Boy Cat, although many fans have speculated online that it is actually a little girl cat (this is not mentioned in this episode but they may be referring to the calico coloring, which is more common for female cats).
Little Boy Cat belonged to a male victim whom the police assume committed suicide. Shawn improvises that the cat is a witness since he’s about to be booted from the crime scene. As a result, Shawn carries the cat around with him for a good portion of the episode. His partner and friend Gus (Dulé Hill) is skeptical about the ruse.
Shawn even takes Little Boy Cat to the next suicide scene.
He places Little Boy Cat in the backseat of the car to direct him to clues, only to have the cat pee on the dead woman’s dry cleaning. Of course Shawn manages to work even this in his favor.
Gus is a bit jealous when Little Boy Cat gets to ride shotgun in the car. Shawn explains the cat gets carsick.
In Juliet O’Hara’s (Maggie Lawson) office, Shawn pretends the cat is channeling the dead girl through him and dances around, catching the attention and ire of Lassiter (Timothy Omundson).
Little Boy Cat is not present again until Shawn has Gus climb a telephone pole as part of the investigation.
At the end of the episode the murderer is discovered threatening police officer Buzz McNab (Sage Brocklebank). Little Boy Cat sneaks into the room and ends up jumping off a bookcase onto the killer’s shoulder, saving the day.
Shawn proclaims Little Boy Cat to be a hero and then gives him to McNab as a wedding present.
Final Mewsings: Boys or girls, cats make good investigators.
