Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains spoilers for several episodes!
Synopsis: Frank (William H. Macy) learns the fate of the homeless shelter. Fiona (Emmy Rossum) decides to make a financial investment to help a neighborhood business.
Cat Cattle Call: Fiona visits the laundromat which is owned and run by an elderly woman named Etta (June Squibb). Etta lives above the laundromat and owns countless cats.
Etta explains how some men are trying to buy her out of the laundromat and apartment. If they do she and her cats will have no place to live.
The story continues in the next episode, The Defenestration of Frank. Fiona is working at the diner when she sees one of Etta’s cats run into the back.
She carries the cat back to the laundromat where Etta exclaims, “Oh, there’s Singletary!” She explains the cat has been depressed since she was told they would have to move. Fiona sees a potential for making money and offers to buy the establishment, allowing Etta to continue to live there.
After going to the bank, Fiona gets the loan and tells Etta. Etta is sitting with her sick exotic shorthair cat McMahon and doesn’t remember anything about what they discussed. Etta signs the agreement anyway.
In the next episode, You’ll Never Ever Get a Chicken in Your Whole Entire Life, Fiona is running the laundromat. She is shocked to see that Etta has not yet cashed the cashier’s check for the place.
Fiona starts to realize the business is a money pit. The machines are old and impossible to repair but too expensive to replace. On top of that there is a gas leak.
In addition, Etta is getting more disagreeable and confused, not remembering their agreement at all. Fiona even catches her eating cat food. When Fiona realizes the check is still pinned to Etta’s bulletin board, she grabs it and leaves.
It should be noted that the featured exotic shorthair cat McMahon appears to the be the same cat actor who played Furguson on the series New Girl.
Final Mewsings: Cats are their own little laundromats.
Many thanks to Dad for letting me know about the cats in this episode!
