Music Artist: MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob
Directed by: Candace Patterson and Michael Reckinger
Synopsis: A music video for the MC Skat Kat follow up to Paula Abdul’s hit Opposites Attract.
Cartoon Cats: MC Skat Kat (voiced by Derrick ‘Delite’ Stevens) breaks out in his own single and video co-starring Paula Abdul. Like the Opposites Attract video, this one also incorporates live action with animation. Paula pops out of an inkwell (a tip of the hat to the Out of the Inkwell series of animated shorts by Max Fleischer) while Skat Kat starts out in black and white and eventually colors himself in.
The Stray Mob is a group of characters singing back including the cats Fatz, Taboo, Leo, Katleen and Silk. Fatz is the short cat who dances with Skat Kat near the beginning of the video and then has a solo rap in the middle.
Taboo is a male black cat who dances with Silk, a brown female cat, and Katleen, an orange female cat.
Leo is the muscular cat first seen at the beginning of the video.
The song is about the Skat Strut, a new dance craze which sweeps the world. At the end of the video, we realize Skat is simply dreaming about his success until Paula comes along and bursts his dream bubble.
An entire album of Skat Kat songs entitled The Adventures of MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob was released but despite the popularity of the music video for Skat Strut the album did not become a hit, although it sold better overseas.
The directors on the extremely well animated video were Candace Reckinger and Michael Patterson who were also responsible for the classic Take on Me video for the A-HA single. They also directed a video for the MC Skat Kat song Big Time which was not officially released (we will be writing that one up in the future).
Final Mewsings: Skat Kat was definitely one cool cat!
