Smile, Darn Ya, Smile! (1931)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising

Synopsis: Foxy (voiced by Johnny Murray) works as a streetcar conductor and encourages everyone via song to smile but runs into trouble when a cow blocks the tracks and then the car runs out of control.

Cartoon Cats: At the beginning of the short Foxy is singing the title song and ringing the streetcar’s bell in time. It is then revealed the pull is actually a very long cat’s tail and the cat’s rear end is pulled up with each tug to ring the bell. Oddly enough later on the pull is just a normal bell pull.

When Foxy and his girlfriend Roxy (voiced by Rochelle Hudson) have their path impeded by a cow, a group of hoboes sing the title song to them (with the very recognizable voices of The King’s Men). A cat is among these characters.

Final Mewsings: What is it with these early cartoons using cats in weird ways by pulling their tails?
