Synopsis: Deprived of his rightful inheritance by his cruel and rapacious uncle, scoundrelly rake Sir Arthur Blake (George Sanders), Benjamin Blake (Tyrone Power), early 19th century orphan cum adventurer, seeks a fortune on a South Seas island and finds love with beautiful native girl Eve (Gene Tierney). After harvesting a king’s ransom in precious pearls, Blake returns to England to seek retribution and to reclaim his lands and title.
Purr Blur: On the run from the Peelers (19th Century British policeman), Blake is given safety and shelter above a grog shop by Bristol Isabel (Elsa Lanchester), combination doxie-serving wench. Isabel keeps a black cat in her room, silhouetted on the sill against the window.
The poor cat seems to want desperately to bolt from the scene a couple of times but appears to be tethered in place to prevent such desertion.
The cat is still sitting on the sill when Bristol accompanies Blake from the room.
Final Mewsings: Cats have kinship with the fugitive and the downtrodden.
