Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)
Starring: Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, Frank Morgan
Directed by: W.S. Van Dyke II
Synopsis: Gwen Marlowe (Jeanette MacDonald) and Ernest Lane (Nelson Eddy) are a happily married couple starring in their 6th year in the hugely successful Broadway operetta Sweethearts but mounting frustrations have them looking for a more pastoral life in Hollywood.
Cat Burglars (Scene Stealers): Between acts during their sixth year anniversary on stage in the musical (and being married), the couple come offstage and head to their dressing rooms. A stage hand pulls Ernest aside and shows him a basket in which a mama cat had a litter of six kittens before the show started.
Ernest reaches into the basket and picks up one of the kittens, as the stage hand says he’s going to tell Dink and that he’ll get the story into the paper. Ernest suggests they give the cat her privacy and congratulates the cat, saying he hopes the following year she’ll break her own record.
Final Mewsings: New cat mothers appreciate having privacy.
