Directed by: Peter Glenville
Synopsis: Graham Weir (Laurence Olivier) is a timid public schoolteacher in England who tries to help a young female student named Shirley (Sarah Miles) by tutoring her after hours, not recognizing her growing affection for him.
Purr Blur: At the very beginning of the film during the opening credits we see one of Mr. Weir’s younger students running to school. As he runs down a street away from the camera and Laurence Olivier’s screen credit is up a black and white cat runs along the length of the wall on the right towards the camera and turns left off the screen.
Kitty Cameo: A short time later we see Mr. Weir’s home where fellow teachers are visiting. A black cat is sitting on the front doorstep of their home when the guests leave.
The door opens and the cat scurries inside past the numerous pairs of feet.
Later we see Mr. Weir’s wife, Anna (Simone Signoret) sitting in a chair watching television with the black cat in her lap.
Final Mewsings: Cats may seduce you into loving them but they won’t press charges.
