Directed by: Joseph Depew
Synopsis: Elly May (Donna Douglas) plans to enter her dogs in Mrs. Drysdale’s Dog Show.
Kitty Cameo: In one scene Elly May is teaching her dogs some tricks. She has little Arnie walking across two ropes. Rusty the cat (played by cat actor Orangey) is watching intently.
After Arnie does the trick, Elly May rewards him with whatever he wants from a basket. When Arnie takes a whole hamhock, Elly May tells the dogs that whoever does the trick next will get to share. Rusty then jumps up onto the ropes and starts to walk.
Elly May picks up Rusty and explains to him that cats aren’t allowed in the dog show.
Jed (Buddy Ebsen) walks out of the house and asks Elly May what is happening. She explains that Rusty is jealous because she’s learning her dogs some tricks. Jed suggests she learn Rusty some, too, but she explains it’s for the dog show. She sets Rusty down on the back of the family truck.
Later in the show Elly May is teaching Arnie another trick. Rusty is sitting in a nearby wheelbarrow watching.
Granny (Irene Ryan) sneaks out of the house with a shotgun and asks Elly May if her Pa is around. When she says no, Granny walks to the wheelbarrow and tells the cat to shoo, pulling Rusty out by the scruff and putting her gun inside.
A moment later as Granny is explaining how she’s going down to the bank to get her money, Rusty actually pops his head back up as if wanting to get back in the wheelbarrow.
Final Mewsings: Cats don’t think dog shows should discriminate.
